Why a Car Shop Restores Tractors
We should be upfront about something: Texoma Classics is best known for classic car restoration. We've been restoring vehicles in Sherman since 2001, and the majority of our work involves vintage automobiles, custom builds, and restomods.
So why do we take on vintage tractor restoration?
Because the work is the same work. Engine rebuilding is engine rebuilding, whether it's a small-block Chevy or a Farmall C-series four-cylinder. Metalwork and welding are metalwork and welding, whether you're patching a fender on a '69 Camaro or repairing cracked cast iron on a John Deere two-cylinder. Paint preparation, primer, and finish coats follow the same principles on a tractor hood as they do on a car body. Electrical systems, hydraulic lines, mechanical linkages — the fundamentals translate directly.
The difference is that most automotive restoration shops won't take on a tractor. They don't want to deal with implement hydraulics, PTO systems, or three-point hitches. They don't have the floor space or the rigging to handle the weight. And they're not interested in learning the quirks of a magneto ignition or a hand-crank starting system.
We are. We find this work genuinely rewarding, and we're good at it. Being honest about our roots as a car shop doesn't diminish our tractor work — it explains why we bring a level of fit and finish that most dedicated antique tractor mechanics can't match.
What We Restore
Every vintage tractor restoration starts with an honest assessment of what you have and a conversation about what you want. Some owners want every bolt correct to the year and model. Others want the tractor running reliably so they can use it on their land. Both are valid, and we tailor the scope of work accordingly.
Engine and Mechanical
Complete engine rebuilds for vintage tractor powerplants — from Ford flathead four-cylinders to John Deere two-cylinder horizontal engines to Farmall overhead-valve designs. We handle bore and hone work, valve jobs, crankshaft inspection, bearing replacement, and gasket fabrication for engines where parts are no longer manufactured. Fuel system restoration, governor adjustment, carburetor rebuilding, and magneto or distributor ignition service. Clutch, transmission, and rear-end work including PTO shaft and hydraulic pump rebuilding for three-point hitch and implement systems.
Body, Sheet Metal, and Cast Iron
Vintage tractor restoration demands metalwork skills that go beyond typical automotive bodywork. Hood panels, grille assemblies, fender brackets, and fuel tanks — we repair, fabricate, or source vintage tractor parts as the project requires. Cast iron repair on engine blocks, transmission housings, and axle housings is a specialty. Cracked cast iron is one of the most common problems on tractors that have sat for decades exposed to Texas weather, and it requires patience and the right welding technique to repair properly.
Paint and Finish
A Farmall red isn't just red. A John Deere green isn't just green. These colors are specific, and owners who care about authenticity notice when they're wrong. We match factory paint codes, prep surfaces to bare metal when necessary, and apply primer and finish coats in our paint booth to deliver a result that holds up to show-field scrutiny. For working restorations, we use durable modern paint systems that can handle the reality of field use while still looking sharp.
Tires, Wheels, and Accessories
Rim restoration, tire sourcing (including correct-era sizes and tread patterns for show tractors), and accessory restoration including seats, lighting, decals, and badging.
Tractors We Work On
We've restored tractors from the major American and international manufacturers, with particular experience in the brands most common across North Texas farms:
- John Deere — Model A, B, D, G, and the later numbered series. The two-cylinder "Johnny Poppers" are a favorite in this shop.
- Farmall / International Harvester — H, M, Super A, Cub, and the lettered and numbered series. These were the workhorses of Grayson County agriculture.
- Ford — 8N, 9N, 2N, and the later Ford-Ferguson models. The most widely produced tractors in American history, and we see them regularly.
- Allis-Chalmers, Oliver, Case, Massey-Ferguson — less common in our area, but we welcome them.

The vintage tractor community in North Texas is real and active. County fairs, tractor pulls, antique equipment shows, and local club gatherings keep these machines in the public eye and connect the people who care about preserving them. If you're restoring a tractor for show, we understand the standards — correct paint, correct decals, correct hardware, and the kind of fit and finish that earns a second look from the judges.
But not every restoration is for the show field. There are very few shops in North Texas — or anywhere near Dallas Fort Worth — that will take on a vintage tractor restoration with the same care and capability we bring to our automotive work.
