The 1973 Volkswagen Thing, officially known as the Volkswagen Type 181, is a distinctive classic vehicle celebrated for its robust design and historical significance. Initially developed for the West German Army, the Type 181 was manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 1968 until 1983. This two-wheel drive, four-door convertible quickly became a favorite in the civilian market, known by various names: Kuriereagen (“courier car”) in West Germany, Trekker (RHD Type 182) in the United Kingdom, the Thing in the United States (1973-74), Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy. Civilian sales concluded after the 1980 model year. Produced in multiple locations, including Wolfsburg, Hannover, and Emden in West Germany, as well as Puebla, Mexico, and Jakarta, Indonesia, the Type 181 shared its mechanical components with several iconic Volkswagen models. It utilized the dependable mechanics of the Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) and the pre-1968 Volkswagen Microbus. The floor pan, borrowed from the Type 1 Karmann Ghia, offered a wider base than the Beetle, enhancing both stability and handling. Initially, the Type 181 featured rear swing axle suspension with reduction gearing from the discontinued split-screen Volkswagen Transporter. However, in 1973, Volkswagen upgraded the suspension to double-jointed axles, similar to those used by Porsche, and an IRS semi-trailing arm setup, akin to the 1303 and US-spec Beetles. These upgrades provided improved ride quality and durability, making the Type 181 a versatile and reliable vehicle for both military and civilian use.
