Automotive Technician

Texoma Classics is a classic car restoration shop in Sherman, Texas. We take vehicles from bare metal to finished cars — frame-off restorations, restomods, engine swaps and full mechanical modernization, on everything from muscle cars and classic trucks to Airstreams and vintage tractors. We are hiring an experienced Automotive Technician for the mechanical side of those builds.

The work does not repeat. In a given week you might pull and rebuild a small block, wire an EFI conversion, plumb air conditioning into a car that never had it, convert drum brakes to disc, and fabricate a bracket that does not exist because nobody has made one since 1968. If you are coming from a shop where you did the same three jobs all day, this is the opposite of that.

You would also be working on genuinely interesting vehicles. These are cars people have waited years and spent real money to have done properly, and they leave here photographed and documented. The shop is four warehouse-sized buildings with lifts in multiple buildings, shop air, MIG and TIG welding, a paint booth, a dedicated upholstery room, diagnostic equipment, an A/C machine, floor jacks and WiFi throughout. You bring your own hand tools and toolbox; the equipment is already here.

Work is steady year-round. The shop is currently at capacity and the constraint is people, not projects. This is a 1099 contractor position paying $30–$45 per hour depending on experience, 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday, on site in Sherman. It is not a salaried W-2 role and it does not include benefits — we would rather say that plainly than waste your time.

This role covers the mechanical side of a build, from teardown through road test:

• Diagnose, repair and rebuild engines, transmissions, drivetrains and rear ends on vehicles from the 1930s through the 1980s
• Perform engine swaps and modern drivetrain conversions into original chassis, including mounts, cooling and driveline geometry
• Wire and troubleshoot electrical systems — full rewires, EFI conversions, gauge clusters and accessory installs
• Upgrade brakes and suspension, including drum-to-disc conversions, power steering and front-end rebuilds
• Plumb and charge air conditioning into vehicles that were never equipped with it
• Fabricate brackets, mounts and small parts that are no longer manufactured
• Road test completed vehicles and correct what the test finds before the car goes back to its owner
• Record work performed and parts used so the customer's build record stays accurate

• Engine and drivetrain diagnosis on both carbureted and fuel-injected vehicles
• MIG welding; TIG is a plus, not a requirement
• Reading wiring diagrams and tracing faults on cars with no diagnostic port
• Confident with hand tools, air tools, lifts, presses and diagnostic equipment
• Basic fabrication — measure, cut, weld, fit
• Working from factory manuals, build sheets and photographs rather than a repair database
• Saying when a job is outside your experience instead of guessing on a customer's car

• Two or more years of hands-on automotive mechanical experience — restoration, hot rod, custom or general repair all count
• Your own hand tools and toolbox. The shop provides lifts, shop air, MIG and TIG welding, a paint booth, diagnostic equipment and an A/C machine — personal tools are yours
• A valid driver's license and a driving record that allows you to road test customer vehicles
• High school diploma or equivalent — demonstrated experience counts in place of formal education
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Able to work on site in Sherman, Texas, 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday

Restoration work is physical. This role involves standing, bending, kneeling and working overhead for extended periods; lifting and carrying parts and assemblies of up to 50 pounds unassisted; working under vehicles both on lifts and on the floor; and working in a shop environment with noise, dust, solvents and varying temperatures.
